Austria´s GM maize bans remain in effect

Austria adopted bans on the importation and cultivation of genetically modified maize. And they will remain in effect, even though the EU Commission has demanded they be suspended.

Specifically, the varieties involved are T25, Mon810 and Bt176, which have basically been authorized in the EU. According to experts, however, their safety and their possible impact on the environment and on human health have not yet been clearly determined. Austria has consciously decided to pursue its own non-industrial, GMO-free mode of agriculture, and therefore insists on maintaining its national protective measures.
