Organic: In any case GMO-free!
The use of genetically modified products (GMOs) or their derivatives (processed products) is prohibited in the production of organic products. They are therefore “GMO-free”.
This means that, e.g., no genetically modified maize or no maize germ oil (processed derivative) from genetically modified maize may be used in organic products. Not only organic products, but also seeds, foodstuffs and fertilisers must be free of GMOs and GMO derivatives. This means that, in organic farming, the entire production chain from the field to the final organic product is GMO-free. Officially recognised control agencies for organic farming conduct regular inspections on farms and in processing enterprises, which ensures that the consumer really gets a product which has been produced without the use of genetic engineering.
So far, there are no GMOs in Austria. Should these be planted all the same, the efforts to keep organic farming GMO-free will be reinforced.
