Working focus of the Fisheries Advisory Council

As a special focus, the council concentrates on presenting and positioning the Austrian fisheries policy both at national level and in the context of the European Community.

Finding solutions in the fishing sector and at national level and creating a link to the EU enlargement toward the east are important objectives of the Austrian Fisheries Advisory Council. As fisheries issues are rather diverse, coordination and compromise are necessary. The range of issues runs from potential economic uses to the function of water quality indicators and biodiversity.

The intensive dialogue is not only intended to reinforce Austria’s position in the Community in matters related to fisheries, but also to ensure a networked exchange of information in all other areas concerned, such as water and the environment.

The Austrian Fisheries Advisory Council meets once a year. These meetings will be attended by the Federal Agency for Water Management, representatives of the federal provinces, the fisheries associations, and scientists. If necessary, there will be an additional meeting once a year with the representatives of the federal provinces.
